About Vitamin B12 injections

B12 is known as hydroxocobalamin, or cyanocobalamin and is an essential water-soluble vitamin that has a crucial role in many bodily functions.

These include:

DNA production

Red blood cell formation and health

Nerve cell formation

What are the signs and symptoms of low B12 levels?

A deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause physical, neurological or psychological problems

These include:

Poor memory, sore tongue, pins and needles, depression, visual disturbances, confusion.

A lack of B12 has also been shown to lead to megaloblastic or pernicious anaemia causing fatigue and weakness.

If you are experiencing these symptoms it is important to contact your GP for a blood test to investigate any underlying cause.

The body does not produce vitamin B12 on its own; it is consumed naturally in animal products and dietary sources such as meat, liver, fish, yeast extract (marmite), eggs or dairy produce and foods fortified in B12 such as cereals or bread.

Benefits and Frequency of treatment.

How often can you have B12 treatments?

This will depend on your bespoke treatment plan that is formulated at your first appointment.

Best practice suggests that B12 is administered by injection into the muscle at the top of the arm (deltoid), once a week for 4 weeks or every two weeks initially to allow B12 levels to peak in the body. After this a monthly treatment is suggested to maintain optimal benefits.

These benefits include:

  • Increased mental clarity
  • Improved mood
  • Increased feelings of wellbeing and health
  • Improved digestive health
  • Improved skin, hair and nail health
  • Alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Aid weight loss

Alongside these amazing benefits, B12 injections have been indicated to protect against cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, prevent heart disease, support bone health, optimise the health of the nervous system and prevent anaemia.
